Stenciled Journal Entries

We are excited to have a new guest artist creating projects for your inspiration. This post is from guest artist Tracy Hickman.

Tools for this craft:

“Tired of being trapped in a box” was created by first painting the journal pages with PaperArtsy fresco paint, sand. A few different washi tapes were used over the top of that and a coat of clear gesso over the whole thing. When dry, I covered the entire two pages with a second Fresco color, wisteria. While still slightly damp, I placed a Stencil1 Scallop Small Stencil, on several parts of the page and with a baby wipe, wiped off the wisteria paint to expose the washi and sand colors below.

I, then, used three vintage cigar labels and painted them with PaperArtsy. I splattered and highlighted them in SethApter Izink gold pigment ink And used a watercolor pencil to highlight the raised design on the labels after painting. I’ve got the center of the labels out attached a piece of vintage ledger paper and then collage vintage Martin butterflies on top. I used some rub ins to indicated Fig 1, 2, and 3 under each of those images. Then, I used a second Stencil1 Small Stripes Repeat Stencil and places on top of a sheet of acetate. With a soft silicone brush, I spread SethApter Izink ICE glaze through the stencil, I masked off some of the lines in some instances to provide more negative space and let dry to give the illusion of “jail bars”. In the top right-hand butterfly, I made a small slice so the butterfly could come in and out of the acetate looking like it was escaping and attached all the acetate’s behind the cigar labels and over top of the vintage butterflies and ledger paper.

I added some stamping around the edges of the cigar bands and journal edges with archival brown ink. To marry the collage elements to the background, I used a third Stencil1 Quatrefoil Small Stencil and places at both edges. Using a foam dabbed, I applied clear embossing ink and sprinkled WOW embossing powder in space dust, and heat set to add a raised glimmer. A vintage typewriter statement on a vintage library card finished things off 😉
