Want to make a gift that WOW’s without breaking the piggy bank? Customizing some simple cotton onesies, these from Gerber, is an affordable way to do it! The expecting parent(s) will be happy to know their baby will be decked out in a one-of-a-kind item and your your wallet will be happy too. Here’s some step by step photos and some final shots of the clothes we made for baby Mason.
Start by inserting cardboard in the onesie, don’t stretch the fabric, instead it should just fit. Next, place the stencil design where you want it to appear on the onesie. Using fabric paint and a flat head stencil brush, paint in the open areas WITH VERY LITTLE PAINT ON YOUR BRUSH. Use a tapping or up and down motion to fill in the design, this will provide you clean results. You can tap around the edges, this will help to not paint outside the stencil as well as holding it in place. OPTIONAL: you can use low tack spray adhesive to get clean edge results when painting.
Lift the stencil and dry with a hair-dryer. Once fully dry you can add another design on top of this one. We added our Lion stencil. Those are the basics for onesie customization. See all the stenciled onesies we made below. Oh and socks and wash clothes too 🙂
