Last night I hosted at the 2012 Etsy Craft Party and it was IN-SANE! Over 800 rsvp’s! The party was held in DUMBO on the waterfront in a large outdoor tent and I brought along some New York meets Nautical Themed stencils – The NYC 4-pack, Anchor, Brooklyn Nautical, Travel 4-pack, and some stencils from Stencil Style 101. Attendees from ages 8-88 got into using Pebeo fabric paint with the stencils to customize bandanas and eco-friendly sandwich bags. We had three tables set up, then we added a fourth, then it became 6 tables and still people patiently waited to sit and create. Then people took to the floor! It was so rewarding to see people make patterns and combine stencil designs to all make one-of-a-kind items.  I sat under the Manhattan Bridge afterwards and drank a root beer and saw kids walking out with their new crafted bandanas, waving them like flags and I was so proud. Thanks to ETSY and all who came out and yes there will be more DIY Stencil1 events especially since Stencil Style 101 drops in October! STAY TUNED!

Stencil1 and Tami

Last week, Stencil1 was a guest of the W Hotels, Intel and Roman Coppola. Well, sort of. We were invited by our friends at Think Pr who organized the launch of Four Stories: A Short Film Competition with Roman Coppola (loved Moonrise Kingdom!) and The Directors Bureau (love Geoff McFetridge!). The gist of the project is that Intel wanted something more than just a commercial to introduce their new Ultrabook laptop (strangely we didn’t see any Ultrabooks there), and instead of producing ads, they’re teaming with the W, Coppola and The Director’s Bureau, for this short film competition. Contestants enter scripts featuring the Ultrabook and a W hotel. Winning stories will be produced by the Directors Bureau. With locations in the Maldives and Mexico City, Stencil1 is putting our writing caps on.

The party was on a fifth-floor terrace of the W downtown with panoramic views of the new WTC and a steady bar. Drinks were creative and bizarre, served in jam jars and toothpaste tubes. And the Bosco was there snapping photo booth pics and projecting them on the side of the building. Stencil1 has been keeping such a low profile this summer finishing our new book, Stencil Style 101, due out in October), that a night out on the town was just what we needed.

Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Charles and Ray Eames. Bjork and Matthew Barney. Synergistic unions resulting in creative genius. And now Stencil1 stencils meet Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers!  I am so happy that Sharpie has released these fabric markers, they are ideal for t-shirt making as well as customizing all sorts of other apparel. I brought these new markers to the book launch party for my new book Stencil 201 so that attendees could make something. I cut up some canvas into patches and let the crowd loose! Check out the video, I think you’ll see people had such a fun time with the stencils and the new markers! Thanks Sharpie for making this event such an ease!

My trip to San Francisco would not be as complete if I didn’t get to do this event at the Curiosity Shoppe. I love this shop! It has the most select, thought-out designer gifts. The owners, Lauren and Derek, are also guests in my new book Stencil 201, in which they show us a tasteful way to stencil grasscloth for use as placemats.

Well, the event coincided with a holiday street fair in the Mission so we had plenty of visitors who got to MAKE SOMETHING.

Some used Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers to make canvas patches…Others used Clearsnap’s Colorbox pigment Ink Pads to make wooden postcards.

An added bonus was I got to finally meet a legend in the DIY world who I had emailed with for years – Grace Hawthorne, one of the founders of Readymade Magazine! Her new venture, Paper Punk, is well worth checking out, talk about a customized building experience!

And so the night was a sweet success, the only thing sweeter were these stenciled cookies by Sumner & Co, aka A Baker in Brooklyn, aka Christian Sumner is also a guest in Stencil 201 and shows y’all how to do it!

In 1995, I interned at the SFMOMA. The museum was just built and I color corrected images in their digital lab among other things. I was thrilled just to be a part of the museum! Well, I had a new thrilling time at the SFMOMA when I did a book signing and demo/DIY table!  I basically let people from age 3 to 75 try out some Stencil1 stencils from Stencil 201 and they seemed to really enjoy it! We used Clearsnap’s COLORBOX Pigment Ink Pads to stencil wooden postcards and Stained by Sharpie fabric markers to stencil canvas patches.  Here’s a few images from the event. Thank you SFMOMA and those who attended, great job!

To SCOPE ART and to all who attended, I say a big, fat THANK YOU! SCOPE is such an important show to me as it balances  street artists with come major, celebrated contemporary artists.  A completely inspiring environment to create art in, wouldn’t you agree?   We had so much fun making wooden postcards and canvas patches using Stained by Sharpie Markers! Check out the pics from the day!
