Last Thursday, we spent our evening at the Brooklyn Museum‘s Art Off The Wall: The Rise of Sneaker Culture exhibit! Many artists of all ages gathered together to collaborate and stencil graffiti in our 12-foot wide drawing of a sneaker mural.

As soon as the clock hit 6:30 PM, people flooded to our stand, grabbed their favorite Stencil1 stencil, and picked up a color and brush. They picked a spot on the sneaker and started stenciling away! It was really awesome to see everyone’s creativity and what they came up with a variety stencils and colors. Artists even got to tag their name right next to their work!

The sneaker was completely filled by the end of the night! We were amazed at all of the artistic talents everyone brought to the community mural and we also met so many great people. Thank you to everyone who came out to our event and we hope you all enjoyed as much as we did.

See you all at our next event!

We finished prepping the base mural. Now it’s your turn to customize the kick with your favorite Stencil1 stencil!

See you guys there!

We had a sweet time at the Stencil1 Demo & DIY event with West Elm Market! To announce that West Elm Market is carrying our new Repeat Pattern stencils we did a demo showing the versatility of a stencil.  The West Elm display crew stenciled this beautiful wall with our Chevron stencil…

I demonstrated how to use fabric paint to stencil some West Elm napkins.

3_napkins

I used Tulip SOFT fabric paint. Once you heat seal and wash your napkins, the painted areas become soft, it’s quality fabric paint.

I did the repeat process while the attendees got a chance to be creative with our smaller patterns.

The DIY project was card-making.

We used ClearSnap ink pads, stencil brushes and our geometric designs as well as some bird stencils. All ages were getting into it!

GQ asked me to do 8 custom paintings for a GAP event they were curating for a San Francisco location. They wanted stencil paintings of San Francisco imagery and the canvas was to be Gap’s new khakis. This is a dreamy project for me not only because of the client but also because I used to live in San Francisco and have a big place in my heart for this city and because I often paint on tarps, see some of my art below.

So painting I can handle, but deconstructing and then reconstructing the khakis to be canvases, not my expertise. Enter Saira Huff. Designer and Super Seamstress to the rescue! A friend connected us and we clicked, she got exactly how the canvases should look. Hints of pant elements, not too much, use of the inner materials a bit, all just spot on. Check out her new store if you are in Brooklyn for vintage and custom finds.

I then started planning which stencils will go with which color khaki/canvas as well as how I can incorporate some layering and pattern into the pieces. I wanted the pattern involved as SF has so much life and history and the unique people that inhabit the city provide it so much influence and culture.

I used my new stencil brushes for the job, so excited to have designed these quality brushes!

As soon as I set up to start painting (I paint larger paintings on the floor), Larry has to be involved. Faithful assistant…

Scallop patterns for sea and air…

I use a variety of brushes when I make a painting to get different textures into the piece…

After I layer some pattern in, I like to paint a loose silhouette layer. This will get a more defined stencil detail layer over it but here’s where I add movement and some energy to the piece. In this case, the power of the cityscape within the charming SF landscape.

Then the detail gets painted in…

And here it is stretched…

Painting the Painted Ladies was fun too, I love the old Victorians on San Francisco.

Stretching canvas and stapling it is pretty satisfying…

Then they were done!  Shipped off to San Francisco, my second home, for a fun time with GQ and the Gap!

And here are images from the Gap event sent to me by my friend Katie Elks and my brother Charles.

I like how the Gap displayed the art in the midst of the khakis.

In January we were lucky enough to have a booth in Maker Space at the CHA Megashow. The Stencil1 team had an incredible experience during our time there and we wanted to share some of the highlights with you!

We flew into LA on Thursday night and were up early on Friday morning to set up our booth. Our booth was in the Maker Space which was a wonderful area that celebrated creativity, innovation, and customization. The Maker Space was curated by Sarah Hodsdon, who is is the smartest and most supportive gal I know. She made the Maker Space an unbelievably fun and creative area!

Two things we were extremely excited about were the debut of our award-winning repeat pattern stencils and tools, and playing with our paint to stencil made by Pebeo Paint, who were our paint sponsor during CHA. Everyone who visited the booth had a blast experimenting with their fabric paints.

One of the highlights of our trip was participating in the FaveCrafts Blogger Networking Event. We connected with so many wonderful artists and bloggers from around the country and hope to collaborate with many of them in the future!

Some of the most memorable times of the show happened during our make-and-takes. We made a lot of friends and had great conversation with all the visitors who stenciled a tote bag at our booth. Not to mention, I had the honor of getting a pic with craft guru Jo Pearson and got a squeeze from my dear and talented friend Candie Cooper.

All in all we had a fabulous show, met so many wonderful buyers, artists, crafters- a great time!
