Create a gradient!

So I have been seeing a lot of these gradient dyed shirts around lately, many which are NOT CHEAP. I like them but I always keep thinking, I could do that! I thought, ok, I’ll dip a shirt in dye but them I thought there is a more controlled way to do this. I used my Stencil1 Sprayers to really get that gradual change in color from dark to light! So I laid down this shirt that is light blue with dark trim. I decided to keep it simple and make the gradient blue as well. Starting at the bottom, I sprayed all along the bottom several layers, then moved upward doing a little less, then up more and even less, etc…Once it dries I will heat seal it with an iron and have a new summer shirt!

Email from Spain

Today I received a very cool email from a stencil graffiti group from Madrid.  They saw Stencil101 on a website and contacted me about their cause. Ok, it’s political so if you don’t want to hear it, click to my next post! Well, I think it’s very cool. They informed me about a former first lady Ana Botella who was anti graffiti saying “Graffiti is not art” and “I’ll destroy graffiti”. Well, they didn’t like this so they created The Ana Botella´s Kit for the International Stencil Conspiracy including a stencil of her signature. See their flickr, they stencil her signature everywhere!

Well, I was fortunate enough to go to Barcelona, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal a few years ago and was blown away by the stencil graffiti ART. Here’s just a few pictures from that trip.

Patches, I’m depending on you…

patches-blog-photo-copy

I am officially addicted to patches. Officially. Here are a few pictures of what I’ve been working on lately. I got this idea to make bags out of old pillowcases. The feel of an old pillowcase is so comforting..and with a good wash, a few quick hems and some straps..voila. But I couldn’t stop there..surely these bags needed some stenciling..but how to get great colors and not have them get lost in the pattern of the pillowcase? Why spray them onto a seperate piece of canvas, heat set and cut out. Sew to the project applique style..and the real Voila is now ready! I can’t wait to start layering the patches onto some other items..like jeans, t shirts, hoodies..I’ll post more pics when I have them!! :) elaine
